TAX FREEZE
Effective April 28, 2008
The Shelby County Board of Commissioners and the Shelby County Trustee, Paul Mattila, are pleased to offer a Tax Freeze Program to
help citizens pay their property taxes. The Tax Freeze Program allows
Shelby County to "freeze" property tax amounts for citizens 65 years or older.
The Tax Freeze program freezes the 2009 tax amount on residential property taxes based on
the tax amount from 2008. Any improvements to the Primary residence (such
as adding a room, carport, or garage) will result in a "proportional" increase
to the frozen base tax amount. Certain land use restrictions may make a portion of a
property ineligible.
You may be eligible for Tax Freeze if you are:
-
Age 65 or older
-
The Primary Residence Owner (Only one property can receive this benefit)
-
An Owner and Combined Household Income does not exceed
$32,590 in 2007
-
APPLICATION MUST BE MADE EVERY YEAR
To apply for the Tax Freeze, contact Trustee Customer Service at (901) 521-1829. Signed applications must be received in the Trustee's
office before April 6, 2009 to qualify for reductions using the 2008 tax amount.
To ensure prompt processing, it is recommended that
applications be returned to Trustee Customer Service prior to December 31, 2008.
